👥 Random Group Generator — Free Online Tool

Make random, balanced teams or groups from a list of names. Splitting a class, a team or a workshop into groups by hand takes time and invites bias. This random group generator shuffles your names with a Fisher-Yates shuffle, driven by crypto.getRandomValues, and then deals them into teams. You choose either the number of teams or the number of people per team. Teams always differ in size by at most one person, so no group ends up noticeably bigger than another.

How to use it

  1. Paste your names into the box, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Choose Number of teams or People per team, then enter the number.
  3. Press Make teams. The names are shuffled and dealt into balanced teams with the sizes shown.
  4. Copy the teams to your clipboard, download a .txt file, or press Reshuffle for a new split.

🚀 Why use this Random Group Generator tool?

Random is only fair when the shuffle is. This generator uses an unbiased Fisher-Yates shuffle with cryptographic randomness, then deals the shuffled names round-robin, so team sizes stay balanced. 100% free, no registration, and complete privacy — everything runs locally in your browser, so your data never touches a server.

Key Features

🔀Unbiased shuffle

Fisher-Yates visits every position once and swaps it with a uniformly chosen earlier position. Every order of the names is equally likely.

⚖️Balanced team sizes

Names are dealt round-robin after the shuffle. Ten names into three teams gives 4, 3 and 3, and the sizes are shown next to the result.

📋Copy or download

Copy the full list in one step, or download it as a plain text file to paste into a document, chat or slide.

🔁Reshuffle in one click

Press Reshuffle to draw a new split from the same names, with the same team count or size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the random group generator fair?

Yes, as far as the shuffle goes. The order of the names comes from a Fisher-Yates shuffle that draws from crypto.getRandomValues, with rejection sampling so no position is favoured. Each arrangement of the names is equally likely before they are dealt into teams.

What happens when the names do not divide evenly?

The extra people are spread one per team, starting from the first team. Ten names into three teams gives 4, 3 and 3. Teams never differ by more than one person.

What is the difference between a random team generator and a random group generator?

They do the same job. This page covers both terms: choose the number of teams, or the number of people per team, and the generator deals a shuffled list into groups of the size you need.

Are the names saved anywhere?

No. The names stay in the open page. Nothing is sent to a server, logged, or stored in the browser, so reloading the page clears them.

🎓 Pro Tips

  • Tip 1: Commas and new lines both work, so a comma-separated list pastes in directly.
  • Tip 2: To keep two people apart, split the list first and run the generator on each half.
  • Tip 3: Choose People per team when group size matters more than the number of groups, for example for a game with a fixed roster.
  • Tip 4: Duplicate names are kept as separate entries, so a name listed twice can end up in two different teams.
