Mean, median or mode: which one

The mean uses every value, so one extreme number moves it. The median is the middle value of the sorted list and resists outliers, which is why incomes and house prices are usually reported as medians. The mode is the most common value and is the only one that works for categories such as shoe sizes or favourite colours. A list can have more than one mode, and it can have none.

🧮 Mean, Median and Mode Calculator — Free Online Tool

Find the mean, median and mode of any list of numbers. The mean, median and mode are the three standard measures of a typical value. Paste a list of numbers and this calculator returns the count, the sum, the mean (the arithmetic average), the median (the middle value of the sorted list), every mode (the most frequent value, which can be more than one) and the range, with the sorted list for checking. Definitions follow the NIST/SEMATECH e-Handbook of Statistical Methods.

How to use it

  1. Paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Click Calculate to see the mean, median and mode.
  3. Check the sorted list to confirm the median by eye.
  4. If the mode row says no mode, every value appears only once.

🚀 Why use this Mean, Median and Mode Calculator tool?

Mean, median and mode answer different questions. The mean is the balance point, the median is the middle, and the mode is the most common value. Seeing all three side by side shows whether the data are skewed. 100% free, no registration, and complete privacy — everything runs locally in your browser, so your data never touches a server.

Key Features

🧮All three averages

Mean, median and mode from one list, plus the count, sum, range, minimum and maximum.

🔢Every mode

If two values tie for most frequent, both are listed. If every value appears once, the tool says there is no mode.

📋Sorted list shown

The numbers are sorted so you can check the median by eye and spot outliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean adds all values and divides by the count, so it moves toward large outliers. The median is the middle value after sorting, so it ignores how extreme the outliers are. For skewed data such as incomes, the median is usually the better summary of a typical value.

How do you find the median of an even number of values?

Sort the list and average the two middle values. For 1, 2, 3, 4 the middle pair is 2 and 3, so the median is 2.5.

What if a list has no mode?

If every value appears exactly once, no value is more common than the others, so the list has no mode. If two or more values share the highest count, all of them are modes.

Can I use decimals and negative numbers?

Yes. Any finite number works, including decimals and negatives. Values are compared as numbers, so 2.5 and 2.50 count as the same value.

Are my numbers saved?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser.

🎓 Pro Tips

  • Tip 1: When the mean and median differ a lot, the data are skewed. Report the median with the range or quartiles.
  • Tip 2: Mode is most useful for categories coded as numbers, such as shoe size or survey answers, where a mean means nothing.
  • Tip 3: Check for typos first. One value entered as 1000 instead of 100 moves the mean far more than the median.
