Shuffle a list into a random order, or pick a set number from it

Why a fair shuffle matters

This tool uses a Fisher-Yates shuffle, which gives every possible order the same probability. A common shortcut, sorting with a random comparator, is known to produce biased orders because the sort never tests every pair. Here each swap draws its index from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with rejection sampling to remove modulo bias, so every ordering of the same list is equally likely.

🔀 List Randomizer — Free Online Tool

Shuffle any list into a random order, or pick a set number from it. Paste a list with one item per line and this list randomizer shuffles it into a random order. Enter a number to take only that many items from the shuffled list, for a random winner, a sample or a running order. The shuffle is a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every order is equally likely.

How to use it

  1. Paste your items, one per line.
  2. Leave the pick box blank to shuffle the whole list, or enter a number to take that many.
  3. Click Randomize to see the new order.
  4. Click Copy result to take the list out.

🚀 Why use this List Randomizer tool?

A randomizer is only as good as its shuffle. A fair shuffle gives every ordering the same probability, which matters for raffles, draw orders and sampling. 100% free, no registration, and complete privacy — everything runs locally in your browser, so your data never touches a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the random group generator?

No. The random group generator deals names into teams. This tool shuffles one list and can take a set number from it. Use the group generator when you want balanced teams.

How many items can I paste?

Up to 5,000 items, one per line. Blank lines and extra spaces are ignored.

Are duplicate items removed?

No. Duplicates are kept, so an item listed twice can appear twice in the result. Remove duplicates first if you want each item once.

How do I pick 3 winners from 50 entries?

Paste the 50 entries, enter 3 in the pick box, and click Randomize. The three lines shown are the winners, in random order.

Why not just use Math.random?

It is fine for casual use, but it is not designed for unpredictability. Cryptographic randomness removes that concern for draws that people will check.

🎓 Pro Tips

  • Tip 1: For an auditable draw, copy the result straight away and keep the input list unchanged.
  • Tip 2: Number your items before shuffling if you need to recover the original order afterwards.
  • Tip 3: A second shuffle is no more or less fair than the first. Each run stands on its own.
